From beta-carotene to vitamin A

BCO1, also called BCMO1, helps convert beta-carotene from plant foods into retinal, a form used in vitamin A metabolism. Plant carotenoids and preformed vitamin A therefore enter the pathway at different points.

Putting the pieces together

Dr. Purser discusses this conversion when reviewing vitamin A intake and visual symptoms. Night-vision difficulty should be evaluated rather than assumed to prove a BCO1 problem. Review dietary sources, absorption and actual nutrient findings before using preformed vitamin A, which can accumulate and requires particular care during pregnancy.

A question to bring to your visit

Am I relying mainly on beta-carotene, and is there evidence of a vitamin A problem?
