THE TEACHING CONNECTION

Helps enzymes process fats, carbohydrates and amino acids.

What it does

Helps enzymes process fats, carbohydrates and amino acids.

Possible deficiency symptoms

Rare deficiency may cause hair thinning, rash and neurological symptoms. Hair loss alone does not establish deficiency.

How supplementation is approached

Start by asking whether your concern is a measured nutrient finding, limited intake, or a hair or skin change with another cause. Your B-complex or multivitamin may already contain biotin. Check the full ingredient list before adding another product.

Food sources

Cooked eggs; nuts; seeds; fish; meats.

Supplement forms

Biotin (vitamin B7).

What to track and reassess

Tell the laboratory and clinician about biotin before blood testing, because supplemental biotin can interfere with some assays. Follow the laboratory’s instructions about timing.

From starting support to follow-up

If you and your clinician start a CMA replenishment plan, you may add one new product at a time, often waiting 3–7 days to see how you feel. A check-in is usually planned near ten weeks during an approximately 100-day period. Follow your written plan for amounts and timing. At follow-up, you may continue, change, or stop each item. This timetable does not automatically end longer-term support.
