Why this matters

Learn why libido, erectile function, testosterone, and fertility are different health questions.

How the pieces connect

A problem with desire is different from a problem with erections or fertility. Causes, possible tests, and treatment options also differ.

Desire, erections and fertility are different goals

Libido describes sexual desire. Erectile function concerns obtaining and maintaining an erection. Fertility concerns the ability to contribute to a pregnancy. These can overlap without having the same cause or treatment. Dr. Purser’s fertility discussion is especially important because testosterone treatment can reduce sperm production. Tell the clinician about current or future fertility goals before considering hormone treatment, rather than assuming that a higher testosterone level automatically improves fertility.

Keep in mind

Some older teaching includes targets or plans that may no longer fit your care. Bring your current results and goals to a qualified clinician before changing treatment.

A question for your next conversation

How would each proposed option affect sperm production and future fertility?
