Methionine restriction: the questions behind the debate

Think through the nutrition questions before cutting methionine or protein.

Based on teaching by Dan Purser, MD. How we prepare these guides

Educational summary

Why this matters

Think through the nutrition questions before cutting methionine or protein.

How the pieces connect

Protein helps meet several needs. Ask how any proposed dietary change would affect nutrition before acting on a homocysteine number.

Changing a food changes more than one pathway

The argument in this discussion is that restricting a nutrient to alter one marker can affect other needs at the same time. Foods containing methionine also contribute protein and other nutrients. An experimental restricted diet, a specialist diet for an inherited disorder and an ordinary balanced diet are different situations. Read this discussion’s criticism of restriction within the population it addresses, rather than using it to overturn a medically prescribed nutrition plan.

Keep in mind

Do not restrict protein on your own to change a homocysteine number. If a specialist prescribed a diet for a rare inherited condition, follow that team’s instructions.

A question for your next conversation

What is the purpose of the proposed diet, and how will nutritional adequacy be assessed?

BUILD YOUR UNDERSTANDING
