Based on teaching by Dan Purser, MD. How we prepare these guides

Educational summary · Source edition: 2015

Why this matters

Explore the possible benefits and risks of estrogen treatment after menopause.

How the pieces connect

Hot flashes, sleep, and vaginal symptoms may call for different options. Route, preparation, and your risk history matter.

Name the symptom and the route

Menopause can involve hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption and vaginal dryness. Dr. Purser discusses estrogen in relation to many outcomes, but the decision begins with which concern needs attention. Route of administration and the particular preparation also matter. A discussion of oral therapy should not be assumed to apply unchanged to topical or local therapy. Keep symptom relief separate from claims about preventing cardiovascular disease.

Keep in mind

Hormone therapy does not protect everyone from heart disease. Discuss the symptoms you want to treat, your risks, and the route of treatment.

A question for your next conversation

Which symptoms are we treating, and why is this route being considered?
