Understand the connection

Interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome can involve persistent bladder discomfort and urinary symptoms. Several conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses inflammatory signaling and immune-cell activity as possible parts of this complex picture. Tissue irritation, pain processing, and the wider health history can all matter; a cytokine pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask what has been done to evaluate infection and other causes and which symptom-management options are appropriate. Review the relationship between food, medicines, pelvic-floor symptoms, and bladder discomfort.
