Understand the connection

F11 encodes clotting factor XI, part of the clotting cascade. Factor XI deficiency can cause a bleeding disorder, while other variants are studied in relation to higher clotting activity.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses rs2289252, factor XI activity, and the distinction between thrombosis research and hemophilia C. The same gene can be associated with very different problems depending on the exact variant and measured function.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether a factor activity test, aPTT, bleeding history, or clot history is relevant. Do not infer bleeding or clotting risk from a gene name without the laboratory interpretation.
