Understand the connection

Hemolytic anemia occurs when red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. Inherited, immune, medication-related, and other mechanisms can be involved.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser explains red-cell breakdown alongside blood counts, reticulocytes, bilirubin, LDH, and haptoglobin. Shortened red-cell survival can also make A1C appear lower than expected for the actual glucose level.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which findings identify the cause and severity and whether a hematology assessment is needed. Shortness of breath, fainting, marked weakness, or a rapidly worsening result may need urgent evaluation.
