Understand the connection

IL12B encodes the p40 protein subunit shared by two cytokines: IL-12 and IL-23. IL-12 combines p40 with p35; IL-23 combines p40 with p19.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser explains why the shared p40 subunit connects the Th1 and Th17 immune pathways. This also helps explain the difference between treatments that target p40 and treatments that target only the IL-23 p19 subunit.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which result is being discussed: a genetic variant, a measured protein level, or a diagnosed condition. How does it fit with your symptoms and other tests? Dr. Purser discusses antioxidant support alongside these pathways; ask how any supplement would fit with your medicines and care plan.
