Understand the connection

Pulmonary fibrosis describes scarring that can impair lung function. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a specific condition diagnosed after evaluating the pattern and excluding other causes.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects epithelial injury, fibroblasts, TGF-beta, inflammatory signals, and oxidative stress with scar formation. He discusses the difference between reducing inflammation and treating a fibrotic process; antioxidant mechanisms do not prove reversal of established lung scarring.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how imaging, lung-function tests, exposures, and other findings establish the subtype. Discuss antifibrotic treatment, oxygen needs, rehabilitation, and monitoring with a lung specialist.
