THE TEACHING CONNECTION

Moving cholesterol between lipoproteins

Moving cholesterol between lipoproteins

CETP transfers cholesteryl esters between lipoprotein particles. This helps explain why the balance of HDL and other lipid particles is more complex than a single cholesterol number.

Putting the pieces together

Dr. Purser places CETP in his cholesterol and cardiovascular teaching. Follow the connection through measured lipids, family history and overall cardiovascular risk. A SNP does not by itself select a CETP inhibitor or establish that HDL is low; medication decisions depend on the full clinical assessment.

A question to bring to your visit

What do my measured lipid results show, and would this genetic finding change their interpretation?

Variant lookup

These names can help you find an entry on your original genetic report. Seeing a name here does not tell you whether it affects your health or whether you need treatment.
