DAOA

The older Purser genetics reference uses the heading “DAOA (AOC1)” in its gut section.

THE TEACHING CONNECTION

Two similar names, two different pathways

Two similar names, two different pathways

You may see DAOA and AOC1 written together in older materials, but they are different genes. DAOA means D-amino acid oxidase activator; AOC1 encodes diamine oxidase, the enzyme discussed in histamine-clearance teaching. Check the exact name on your report to follow the right topic.

Putting the pieces together

For Dr. Purser’s discussion of food-associated histamine reactions and DAO enzyme support, continue to AOC1. DAOA belongs in a different discussion involving D-serine and glutamate signaling. The histamine treatment suggestions under the older combined heading should not be transferred to a DAOA result.

Where the VARS Triad and MTHFR Daily fit

If you are exploring homocysteine or cytokines, Dr. Purser may discuss MTHFR Daily and the VARS Triad: VARS Glutathione, VARS SOD, and VARS Catalase. He gives glutathione a central place in his approach to antioxidant support.

A gene result alone cannot tell you that you need these products or that they will treat a condition. Review your current results, medicines, goals, and tolerance with your clinician before choosing a product or dose.

A question to bring to your visit

Does my original laboratory report say AOC1, DAOA or DAO, and which exact variant was tested?

Reading your own results

Bring your original report, current results, health history, and medicines to your visit. This information can help you ask questions, but it cannot diagnose a condition or choose a supplement dose for you.

Variant lookup

These names can help you find an entry on your original genetic report. Seeing a name here does not tell you whether it affects your health or whether you need treatment.
