Understand the connection

AOC1 encodes diamine oxidase, or DAO, which helps break down histamine outside cells, including in the digestive tract. This is different from DAOA, the D-amino acid oxidase activator gene.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses AOC1 rs1049793 and rs1049792 in relation to histamine processing. He connects the pathway with gut symptoms, food reactions, and factors that can affect DAO activity, rather than assuming every reaction is caused by one gene.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether an allergy, a medication effect, a digestive condition, or another explanation needs evaluation. If a DAO enzyme product or dietary change is being considered, discuss how to use it without unnecessarily restricting nutrition.
