Understand the connection

COL5A1 helps make type V collagen, part of the scaffolding that organizes connective tissue. Pathogenic variants can be involved in classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which differs from simply carrying a common SNP.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects collagen structure with joint laxity, tendon symptoms, skin and wound healing, and autonomic concerns such as POTS. He discusses strength and stability work, careful activity choices, and nutritional cofactors including vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, and adequate protein.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether your symptoms and family history support a connective-tissue evaluation and whether the exact variant is classified as pathogenic. Discuss physical therapy, joint protection, and procedure or wound-healing considerations. Nutrition supports tissue health but does not repair a pathogenic gene change.
