Understand the connection

Graves’ disease involves antibodies that stimulate the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor. Some people also develop thyroid eye disease, which has its own inflammatory features.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects IL-6 with B-cell activity, antibody production, and inflammation in tissues around the eye. He distinguishes thyroid hormone control from the evaluation and treatment of eye disease.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how hormone levels, TSH-receptor antibodies, and eye symptoms should be monitored. New pain, double vision, or vision changes deserve an eye-care assessment.
