Understand the connection

IL-1 beta, or IL1B, is an inflammatory cytokine that is activated through processes including the NLRP3 inflammasome and caspase-1. It participates in fever and the recruitment of immune cells.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects IL-1β with gout, inflammatory pain, and other immune conditions. He discusses targeted IL-1 therapies and the separate role of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in handling reactive oxygen species.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which result is being discussed: a genetic variant, a measured protein level, or a diagnosed condition. How does it fit with your symptoms and other tests? Dr. Purser discusses antioxidant support alongside these pathways; ask how any supplement would fit with your medicines and care plan.
