Understand the connection

IL-6 is an immune messenger that participates in inflammation, infection responses, and tissue repair. It can signal through membrane-bound or soluble IL-6 receptors and the gp130 signaling protein.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses classic signaling, trans-signaling, JAK/STAT3, and the liver’s production of C-reactive protein. He also connects homocysteine and oxidative stress with inflammatory activity. IL6 and IL6R are different genes; a variant in either is not equivalent to a measured IL-6 level.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which result is being discussed: a genetic variant, a measured protein level, or a diagnosed condition. How does it fit with your symptoms and other tests? Dr. Purser discusses antioxidant support alongside these pathways; ask how any supplement would fit with your medicines and care plan.
