Understand the connection

Magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle activity, heart rhythm, and many energy-related enzymes. Profound depletion can be medically serious.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses tremor, muscle spasms, seizures, rhythm disturbances, and the relationship between magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Causes can include poor intake, digestive loss, kidney loss, and medicines; a severe laboratory result needs a different response from a general supplement question.

Bring these questions to your visit

If a laboratory identifies a critical magnesium result, follow its urgent-care instructions. Ask which measurements and symptoms establish severity and how replacement and follow-up should be supervised.
