Understand the connection

MAO-A and MAO-B are enzymes on the outer membrane of mitochondria. They help break down monoamines, including neurotransmitters, and the reaction also produces hydrogen peroxide.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses MAOA rs1137070, rs2072743, and rs6323 alongside MAOB rs1799836 and rs2283729. He connects monoamine processing with riboflavin-dependent FAD, antioxidant defenses, stress, and medication interactions. MAOA and MAOB are on the X chromosome, so one-copy and two-copy results require the correct chromosome context.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether a “fast” or “slow” label is supported by the exact alleles and test method. Discuss mood symptoms, blood-pressure changes, tyramine, stimulants, and possible medicine interactions with your clinician. Genetics alone cannot select an antidepressant or establish a mental-health condition.
