Antigen presentation and celiac susceptibility

HLA-DQA1 contributes to an HLA-DQ protein that presents antigen fragments to CD4 T cells. HLA-DQ function depends on pairing with an HLA-DQB chain, so an isolated marker is not a complete HLA type.

Putting the pieces together

Dr. Purser includes this pathway in the immune and gut discussion. Some HLA-DQ combinations are relevant to celiac susceptibility, but a marker such as rs2187668 does not establish active celiac disease. Symptoms, appropriate testing and whether gluten is being eaten at the time of evaluation matter.

A question to bring to your visit

Do I have a clinically interpreted HLA result, and what testing would clarify the actual gut concern?

Variant lookup

These names can help you find an entry on your original genetic report. Seeing a name here does not tell you whether it affects your health or whether you need treatment.
